You will never pay us a rupee for this material, and nobody may ever charge you for it. That is not the same as it being public property. The toolkit is licensed to your school, for your children — not to be copied onward, translated, forwarded or sold.
Nobody is authorised to sell the Project Sahitya toolkit, to charge a registration or training fee on our behalf, or to bill a school for access to the lessons. Not a reseller, not a consultant, not a district office, not an NGO. We have never licensed anyone to do it and we never will. If you paid money for any part of it, please tell us — we will try to help you get it back, and we will make sure it does not happen to the next school.

These are not requests. They are the conditions on which the material is licensed to you, and doing any of them ends your licence to use it.
The old version of this page invited people to copy and translate the toolkit freely. We were wrong, and here is what changed our mind.
The sequence is the method. These lessons work because the sounds arrive in a particular order, over a particular number of weeks, with particular checks along the way. A well-meaning translation or a trimmed version quietly stops being that sequence — it still looks like the toolkit, it still has our name on it, and it no longer teaches a child to read. We cannot let that be handed out under our name.
A forwarded file has nobody behind it. When a registered school hits a problem — a teacher leaves, a child is not progressing, a lesson does not land — we know who they are and we can help that week. A school working from a copy that reached them through three WhatsApp groups is on its own, and we do not even know they exist.
Children are involved. Registration is how we know which adults are teaching from our material and how our safeguarding commitments reach them. That breaks the moment the material travels without us.
None of this is about money. It is free today, it will be free when it is a hundred times larger, and there is no paid tier, no premium pack and no plan to make one.
Good — we want that too. Send them to projectsahitya.org/partner and we will do the rest. There is no cost, no catch and no queue worth worrying about. They get the full six months delivered day by day, the printable packs, and a person to ask when something goes wrong — all of which a forwarded PDF cannot give them.
If you would rather introduce us yourself, message us and we will write to them directly.
Ask us to add it. We would genuinely like to — the material is written to be translated, just not by strangers. Tell us:
We work through it with someone who knows both the language and the method, test it, and then publish it for every school in that language — including yours. A translation done that way helps thousands of children. One done quietly in a staffroom helps nobody and can set a child back a year.

Subject to your compliance with these terms, Project Sahitya grants you a limited, personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable licence to use the toolkit for non-commercial teaching within your own school, and to make the copies described under “What you may do” above. No other rights are granted, by implication or otherwise, and all rights not expressly granted are reserved. This licence does not transfer ownership of anything.
The licence ends automatically if you breach these terms, and we may withdraw it at any time on notice. If it ends, stop distributing anything you have made and stop holding the material out as ours; you may keep using copies already printed for your own classrooms only if we say so in writing.
The material is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. Nothing here limits rights you have under applicable law that cannot be limited by agreement — including fair dealing or fair use for criticism, review, news reporting, teaching commentary and research. Where the plain English above and this paragraph appear to differ, the plain English above is what we will act on.
This is version 2 of this licence and it takes effect on 6 August 2026. Earlier versions of this page described the toolkit as free to copy, translate and adapt. Those terms no longer apply to any copy you make or share from today onward. If you built something in good faith under the old terms, write to us before you do anything about it — we would rather sort it out with you than have you throw work away.
This licence covers the teaching material only. Photographs of children are not covered and are never published without the guardian consent on file for that child. See our privacy policy for how we handle images and personal data.
Tell us — quietly is fine. A copy circulating in a WhatsApp group, a training company charging for our lessons, a website hosting our pack: send us the link or a screenshot. We do not go after teachers, and we will not name you.
