Before a child reads a line, their eyes have to be able to travel along it.

Say this out loudKeep your head still. Only your eyes move. Follow my finger — slowly.

What to watch for:Heads turning instead of eyes moving. Gently hold a palm near the chin as a reminder.

Say this out loudPut your finger on the first letter. Now travel along the line, one letter at a time.

What to watch for:A child who jumps back to the start repeatedly is losing their place — shorten the line for them.

What to watch for:Speed matters less than accuracy. Do not hurry anyone.

Say this out loudClose your eyes. Count to five. Open them and look far away, out of the window.

What to watch for:Rubbing eyes means the exercise ran too long. Stop earlier next time.
